Urban Lighting Design

During my dissertation project at Edinburgh Napier University, I chose to work on the Closes of the Royal Mile. The aim of the aforementioned project centers on the development of a “Lighting Design Outline” or methodology, for narrow streets/ pathways in urban public spaces. This project was based on an in-depth research outlined in the dissertation report (Available upon request), to form a case study of design considerations, and focusing on one site - Lady Stair’s Close - A Narrow street in Edinburgh, and the connected spaces to it to ensure visual hierarchy.

The principal goal of designing for any public urban element is designing for people as discussed/ demonstrated in the report; therefore, the methodology was largely based on analyzing human instinctive behaviors in relation to lighting. The approach to create the ideal lighting design solution was based on people’s perception of personal safety, and the perception of cities at night in correlation with corridors’ design and urban design.
